DR AUDI

A Kenyan based medical love story of a Clinical Medicine Intern, Dr Audi,The best in Medwax Family Hospital who fell in love with a Somali girl but lost contact with her during the 2007 post election violence. The Somali girl then returns to Kenya as a Medical Officer Intern at the same hospital.

He had not yet proved to her that her facial nerve was fit and loyal, when his alarm rang. He snoozed it with real optimism and continued lying on his bed as if in an acute paraplegic state hanging between fantasy and reality.

          Dr Barke, a General Practitioner at Medwax Family Hospital would have described to him better that he was in the paradoxical sleep, also known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Had he been connected to an electroencephalogram and the readings recorded for him, he would have seen the synchronous rhythm of his brain waves in his dream state.

          He woke up very disappointed. It could vividly be seen by the deepening of his nasolabial sulcus due to the action of his zygomaticus minor.

          Audi has been a single guy for the better part of his life. His amygdala has just fallen for one girl whom she has never had the courage to confess it to her since they were in primary school. They had lived in the same estate in Ukunda ten years ago.  The girl’s family flew to The Republic of Tanzania in 2007 during the post-election violence in Kenya.

       He has never met nor seen the girl since then but was still in love with her. Just the thought of her, gave him palpitations. He is however still in contact with the girl’s family who are still in Ukunda.

          He was still in bed when he recalled that Tasneem would be back in Kenya this year after she completes her medical school at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Upon remembering this, his risorius muscle contracted involuntarily and gave it a hidden smile.

          The special neurons in his reticular activating system were highly depolarized at that moment. He was now fully aroused from his reversible state of unconsciousness. He woke up from his bed and got ready for the day.

It is a Friday morning, a day in which major ward rounds are conducted in Medwax Family Hospital from nine o’clock. Audi is the intern in charge of both gynecological and post natal wards. He has to be there earlier to catch the worms carefully. He has to review the patients, organize necessary work ups and admit any new cases.

          He arrives in the Clinicians’ room, picks up his lab coat and hangs his Littman stethoscope on his cervical region. He checks if his pen torch and patellar harmer are in his pockets and then heads towards postnatal ward. On his way, he remembers the nineteen year old girl whom he has assisted in laparotomy the day before. He decided to go check her. He changes direction then climbs the staircase towards gynecological ward.

          He arrives in the ward and finds her quietly awake. Her brain waves in her cerebral cortex were probably in an alpha rhythm. He supinates his forearm and greets her.
  “How are you doing Daisy?” He asked sensitively, and after an undeliberate pause, “how did you sleep? How is your morning?” He continued.
